Gabby Rosenberg is the inaugural member of the Hair + Make-up division at Sisterbrother Management. She is a sixth generation Texan with a lifelong beauty obsession. This is her story…
I knew very early on what I wanted to do in life… I wanted to be an artist, like my mother. Fascinated by her transformation each day, I knew the power of makeup. THAT would be my medium.
At age 6, Rick Baker and the making of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’ planted the seed. But it was at the age of 15 that I vowed to make beauty my living. That was the year I buried my head in Kevyn Aucoin’s beauty tomb: “Face Forward.” HIS transformations became my new obsession.
I dreamed of assisting Kevyn – of getting the chance to show him my creativity and capability. Forget school! My path would be paved with lipstick and eye shadow. The path to self-satisfaction. The path to working side-by-side with Kevyn Aucoin.
Working on myself, my cousins and my sisters, I tried on every look he outlined until they were “perfect.”
Sadly, Kevyn left our world before I could reach my goal. After Kevyn, several other mentors came into the light and it’s been almost twenty years of self-taught trial and error as a working artist.
My goals remain the same: working toward “perfection”, self satisfaction, and approval from my mentors.
My career began within Neiman Marcus for NARS, Chanel and Shu Uemura working on real women which, any make-up artist will tell you, can be exhausting. Luckily, I thrive on problem solving. From that hands-on training I became a very capable artist. I can clock your foundation color from 100 yards! Those years led to the ultimate audition…runway make-up.
Runway IS realway. There are no second chances, no retouching, no ego allowed. I take those sentiments to all my work. I don’t want to rely on retouching. A perfectionist streak haunts me, always. As an artist, I ALWAYS want more time. As an artist, the work is NEVER ready. As an artist, the work is NEVER to my satisfaction.
For me, there’s no other way to live, though! It’s about making something out of nothing…execution of imagination.
